RIP BSD 6v6 Tournament

11 Jun

BSD 6v6 has died. I pulled the plug myself.

In general, I think the May BSD 6v6 tournament ended up being a failure, but it was not without some good points and learning value.

What happened?

What eventually happened was I simply didn’t want to hand-hold all these teams that seemed so interested in the tournament. I was too dependant on teams showing up that I had no power at all. If a team didn’t show up, I couldn’t just cut them because we needed teams to compete so instead I had to work my ass off finding a time that would work for the team, then making sure the team members knew about matches etc.. it was too tough for the team leads to tell their team. After getting down to a finite number of teams, I set a date a couple days in advance for everyone to show up and play the remaining matches. Every team came up with some excuse the day of the final matches, so I rage ended the tournament. hehe

What did we learn?

-We learned that there is a demand for organized and structured group vs group combat in Warhammer Online within a confined space and set of rules.

-We learned that leaving scheduling in the hands of the teams competing ensures it will never get done or organized.
-
We learned that most people competitive enough to sign up in such a tournament, would rather not show up then risk losing a match. In general, if a team couldn’t field the best 6 people they know about, they would not make it to their scheduled time.

-We learned that a scheduling forum helps, but a team captain excited about 6s is not capable of checking a scheduling forum once every 24 hrs or so.

How I would do it in the future?

-I would start by not putting the focus so much on winning, or being “the best on the server” so it becomes more about playing an enjoying the spirit of competition, then having to win.

-I would probably not do 6s again, I would probably do 3-4 person groups and enforce spares.

-I would probably set a time, maybe Wednesdays at 7pst and have everyone show up at that time weekly, and work on rankings based on the results from teams that show up and complete matches. Teams will know in advance if they can make the time.

-I would continue to use the scheduling forum for events, all team members would have access and teams could alternately schedule matches for whenever if those chose to.

-I would keep the ruleset and location. They did seem to work out well.

-I would hint at a possible BSD 3v3 tournament on my blog by posting a how I would do it in the future section to a post.

Big thanks to those that did come out for 6s and did help out. A lot of you did do good work telling your teams and making matches. Some good matches did occur, and I know the team I was on enjoyed our matches a lot.

1.3.5 new vendor and potions in LOTD

25 May

Wandering around the warcamp in LOTD yesterday, I noticed there was a new vendor with three new potions purchaseable with scarabs.

A heal potion, an AP potion and a thorn like potion.

6v6 Update

25 May

Alright, so I enjoyed my long weekend and now I need to get this tournament wrapped up soon here.

Last week the big surprise was Third Faction knocking out Team RPD FGT. A few other teams backed out due to member issues and more scheduling issues continue to plague unprepared teams.

This week the challenge as always will be to get scheduling worked out and determine some top teams. Order has a couple strong teams right now, so soon this may be more about trying to rank them.

Team Captains, please check the scheduling forums often this week. (twice daily min) for new posts and to sign in for scheduled matches.

Cheers,
Tyanon.

BSD 6v6 – Round 2 – Elimination Round

17 May

I have waivered back and forth on doing single knockout, double knockout etc.. I have decided that this tournament will be single knockout due to the scheduling issues that have caused so many problems. Future tournaments will most likely run a slightly different format, and certainly more strict. I can also schedule some exhibition matches for next round as well for those that are eliminated.

For Round 2, the matchups will be:

Girls Next Door vs Team Ruination
League of Extraordinarily Gay Gentlemen vs Team Mango
Coalition Saints vs Team Laphraoig
Third Faction vs RPDFGT
Pedobear vs Team Sexy

*MDK is on standbye and may have a bye for this round

BSD 6v6 Update

16 May

Well, we did manage to get some games done this week, and a few that may or may not get their exhibition match done in the next couple days.

Gratz to League of Extraordinarily Gay Gentlemen on their win over the very straight, good looking crew of Laphraoig.

Gratz to Girls Next Door on their win over MDK.

I am setting up the next round as we speak, so get your exhibition matches in asap. Those that have already done their match will pick which team they fight for the next round. The two winners will pick, then the two losing teams will have a pick.

The new schedule method is improved, but it still isn’t working fully. Perhaps this is simply something that won’t be able to be corrected for 6v6. Maybe teams need to be entered in teams of 8-10 members to ensure subs will be available. Maybe we need to look at doing 4s in the future or something… we will see.

**Important 6v6 Change!

09 May

All teams need to have their captain or scheduler sign up on a very small scheduling forum I have created. http://6v6.backseatdev.com

Things have changed a bit, you still need to have an exhibition game to continue, but I am adding in a set date/time for a match now. On the scheduling forums, team captains have ~36hrs to post up blacklist day/times and suggested date/times for their match. I will do the best I can combining the two summarized schedule and set an official date/time. Teams may still do their match at any time, but if the official time is missed, I cannot promise anything for continued scheduling of the team that misses it.

Teams will need to be more flexible in both time, and in subbing people in to make this work.

6v6 Update – 6 days in

07 May

Alright, so I admit things are not going awesome so far. Scheduling has not gone well it seems and unless everyone was waiting till the weekend to run matches, everyone fails! haha.

I am refocusing the scheduling system in the next couple days to try to help out teams that have been unable to get matches in. I still want to get the next round started, but no one can play the next round until they complete a exhibition match.

Keep your eye on this site, double your efforts to get your match done and I will hopefully have some new options and some tools for team captains to use.

If you have any feedback on the problems with why your match hasn’t happened yet, it would help a lot if you let me know. Also, teams that are not getting their matches in for whatever reason may need to be replaced, so if you have a team you want in, email me as well. tyanon@backseatdev.com

Playing Matches
1) Get a hold of the other team captain (let me know quick if you are not sure how to contact the other person, I will try to get you an email or something)
2) Figure out a date/time
3) Email me your time just in case of conflicts (tyanon@backseatdev.com)
4) Find your team coordinator
5) Contact me if any issues with scheduling come up and I will see if I can mediate.
6) Make sure your team knows the rules!!
7) Games start on time. If your team is still not ready 10min after the start time they either go anyways with what they have, or forfeit. At the other teams discretion this can be flexible.
8) Report back results of each game.

Everyone on your team MUST KNOW THESE FEW RULES!!!! -1mil DKP if anyone tries to claim they didn’t know.

Armor/Weapons
Any armor/talismans etc.. is fine.

Spells/Abilities
Anything is fine. Including self rez etc..

Consumables
Anything goes, including but not limited to: Armor pots, Liniments, banners, rez pots.

Arena Zone
The Maw: Everything between the outer walls and the inner keep. No one enters the inner keep and no one goes up on the outer walls or stairs. Everything else is part of the zone and you may use any obstacles or open area as you see fit.

Start/Reset area:
-Order team starts outside the fort at the middle door in South Maw.
-Destruction team starts outside the fort at the door in North Maw.

Winning Criteria
A match, at least for preliminary rounds will be win 2 out of 3 games. Finals may be 3 out of 5.

To win a game, you need to wipe the other group completely. You will be told when you have won by your coordinator.

Time Limits for preparation
When your group is reset back in the starting area between matches, you have 3 minutes to rebuff and be ready for the start call. There is no respeccing/leaving the zone between matches. Any longer cooldowns is not a concern during this phase and will not be accomodated.

Spectators
While I would love to have spectators, it is just too much work, so match times will be a secret and only known by the two teams scheduled to compete. It is expected that players participating follow this rule.

Subs
In the interest in actually doing this, and with the complexity of scheduling etc.. Subs will be allowed as long as they are not on other teams. Please use this only for scheduling purposes, not rigging groups for who your against.. Try to stick as close as possible to your actual group.

Match Stalemate
If teams have not engaged each other by ~5min mark, the coordinators may force both teams to go to a smaller area (such as the east or west side of the fort) . This will be defined better.

Coordinators
We will need 1 person from each side (a rezzer) to come out and help start, reset and end the match.

The communicators need to be able to be in contact with each other during the matches. IRC/Vent/MSN, doesnt matter.
-They will give instructions to begin
-Let the other coordinator know when their sides team is completely wiped
-Rez up any players
-Will stay out of the way. Inside the inner keep of the fort at all times while a match is going on.
-Your coordinator can be anyone, but try to get someone from IRC as that makes things a lot easier

Teams will be expected to find a coordinator.

Good luck to everyone, and try not to be jerks or this is gonna crash and burn fast!

BSD 6v6 Update

28 Apr

Only a few days to go, it looks like we are mainly struggling getting more order teams signed up. It is a bit surprising that I have almost an infinite number of Destruction teams waiting to come onboard, but I can’t get more then a handful of Order teams to jump in.

If you are in a position to advertise this or know some Order that might have fun, please get the word out ASAP and have them contact me immediately. I would love to get them in.

Teams Signed up so far
——————————————

Destro: Team Sexy, Team MDK, Team Ruination, Team Laphroigm, Team Mango
Order: The League of Extraordinarily Gay Gentlemen, *Team Isego, *Team Brohendas

*More team details need to be submitted asap!
