backseatdev’s warhammer online fantasy expansion

23 Jun

I have been asked several times in discussions about adding content to Warhammer about what I would like to see done. Obviously this is not based completely around realistic requests and I have not spent many hours of careful thought on it, but it is a more put together answer then I usually give when asked this question.

Base stuff for expansion:

  • 6v6 Scenerios: Just add a few of these in. You don’t need to make a ship to fight on, just have Caledor woods 6v6 and Caledor Woods regular scenerios as queueing options. You know what else this does? this funnels “some” premades into the 6v6 queues and away from the people queueing solo for the regular versions of the other scens. The community could also run event nights based on that 6v6.
  • Level Cap to 50: Resets everything in a way. All of a sudden people that were on top for the past 12-18 months now have a new game to play.
  • Add some level 50 gear in, but with limited resources, maybe just use the current gear, but add ways to upgrade the armour, stats and abilities on them as rewards for pvp and pve. (Armour increase shards, special talismans…slots only available for level 50 bound gear)
  • Add a base armour set with maybe only some wounds/toughness on it. Lots of slots for people to customize it as they wish. This fits in great with the change to appearance. Let any armour piece be set to look like any piece of that slot you have unlocked in your tome.
  • 5 more tactic points. 10 more renown points at 50.
  • Make the weekend battlefronts epic. Bring back thunder valley and throw 24 people in there. Make the rewards GOOD. etc..
  • Make high level versions of Gunbad (scale the mobs, rewards etc..)
Make high level versions of the low level city instances..
Add a cool arena type instance where your group has to fight off waves of mobs and boss rounds.

Complicated Stuff:

  • Create a new server if it was easier and create a third realm. Dont care how its done. A new server would be a huge reset of the game, and a perfect marketting opportunity to bring new people and old people in and start fresh with the polished game and additional content. Obviously this would be a lot of work, but I think it would have a great ROI.
  • PvP Quests: Add towers/objectives all over the lakes. Have people solo/group get these quests and be sent to take a tower for example. On the opposite end, another realm is dispatched to stop them. (From APB)

I am sure there is other things, but those would be the biggest for me.

Few things I like, and some things I violently disagree with :)

Raising the cap to 50 is not a good idea. I’m far more in favor of a horizontal progression. Very slight, incremental benefits. I don’t want this game to go the way of WoW or EQ2. I would quit the game. Create 10 more renown ranks, perhaps one more mastery point because of it. That gives a very slight increase in power, and a bit more variability in spec. I want content (new sandboxes to play in), not an artificial increase in a time sink that will trivialize previous content.
I love the idea of weekend warfronts being significant. I want them to be fun and meaningful as well, and I feel the same about 6v6 scenarios being made common. Just not caledor woods, that is the slowest, most painful Scenario when the sides are unmatched. As much as I hate Reikland Factory, at least it ends quickly.

In discussions, I have had a few people call that out. I will accept that it may cause more problems then it would fix.

My reasoning for suggesting it was to sorta wipe the slate clean, making the appearance of a good point for people coming to Warhammer to jump in and not be as far behind the people that have been farming gear and working on upgrades and have been at max level for a full 2 years before they even start.

I don’t like the raising the level cap. I do like settting up high level versions of lower dungeons.

Agree that cap to 50 is probably a bad idea, making our beloved game go the way of WoW.

6v6 Scs, cool idea. I like it.

Third Faction: I agree that it would be a cool idea, I’m interested to see if they move that way.

On that topic: I know that originally Mythic wanted to avoid DAOC II for WAR. However, I think that they got a lot of things RVR-wise right with DAOC, and should have implemented more of them (notably, the 3rd faction). In fact, I just activated my Free Trial for DAOC, and though I can’t STAND the interface (too clunky and laggy), the concept is cool. I wish I could stand to play it.

And yes, weekend warfronts having some kind of actual effect would be amazing. I am looking forward to future Live Events like the Night of Murder, etc. Hopefully we’ll see more of those in the near future, though their absence and the lack of other interesting things that Mythic has always done makes me wonder if they really ARE planning an expansion to come out soon.

Love the armor idea. Nice way to implement armor crafting. Have it crafted from items salvaged from other gear sets, dropped off other players or dungeon bosses. Gives set bonuses, 3 slots for talismen and 1 slot for tinctures (new apoc items) that add procs or special bonuses (crit, for example).

    6v6 sc would be awesome.
24 v 24 sc weekend would be epic.

3rd faction won’t happen unless it is implemented as a nuesence faction playable by both sides. More likely to see more races added to the current factions.

No level cap. Bad idea written all over it. However, with mythic already having “item levels” higher than the current player level it seems like a possibility.

New wings to current dungeons and new dungeons added would be great.

I vote for new, wide open all pvp zones added to t4 with heavy realm bonus items contained in them. That or remodel the current zones.

I like the idea of the armor customization, if the implementation is such that people would not still prefer the epic set bonus (like AA or casting haste).

On the other side, I doubt about the feasibility of 6vs6 scenarios, unless a restriction on the number of healing classes is given. With 3 healers, ress potions, banners, a 6vs6 fight never ends. In Tovl invasion it works since defending groups typically do not exceed two healers.

I’d prefer having more tacticts/abilities available on the basis of renow rank but this would introduce more balance issues, I fear.

Another possible upgrade would be an additional class/race to be played by both realms.
