“dueling” an overview – Part 1 – Warhammer Online

08 Apr

Another requested topic was for dueling and people that grief duelers. This is quite the topic so I am going to break it into 4 different parts:

Part 1: An initial overview and my thoughts on dueling in general
Part 2: The unwritten rules for people wanting to try it
Part 3: Mythic’s stance on dueling
Part 4: People that grief duelers

Part 1: Overview

People duel for many reasons, and contrary to what a lot of people believe, it is not because they have outstanding questions about their sexual orientation and harbour feelings of wanting to ruin their server. For the vast majority of duelers, they are simply looking for the thrill of 1 vs 1 combat pitting their knowledge and skill against another persons knowledge and skill. Others may do it to test out tactic setups and gear choices to fine tune their characters.

Duelers in my experience tend to be among the min/maxer crowd and often gain a good base of knowledge of the enemy classes which does often translate into increased performances in a group vs group setting. The key though, is that they enjoy it and do it for the fun.

Another common misconception is that duelers are simply swapping tokens or renown in a rank up quick scheme. The reality is, while a small number of people setup farming of other characters only for gain, they really are not considered duelers and would probably find a way to exploit the system anyways. Token gain is almost non-existant from 1v1 and both tokens and renown could be earned as fast or faster participating in other areas of the game.

Personally, I do not duel. It is not because I feel it is wrong, but because I really do strongly prefer the group vs group battles.
I have some good friends/guildies that like to duel and I will help set them up if I am able to. Sometimes I think I should duel more, just to learn more about the inner workings of other classes, it would probably make me a better player. Maybe I will try it out when writing the next part of this article…

The next part is the unwritten rules of dueling and how to get involved if you are interested.

The bloggers selected by Mythic for the tour and Q/A are on site and they need more questions. They are already getting some great answers and have a ton of awesome stuff up on their blogs. Here are some links to check out and some teaser Q/A’s that I personally found interesting! Each site has a unique set of questions and answers and there are lots of questions being asked and updated!

tauronus: Will the city siege timer be 1 hour?

The city siege timer is variable in the new city system but in the same ballpark.

WARAyleen: Any changes to the Stage 1 PQ Bosses?

Yes, Stage 1 has changed quite a bit.

Q: Who are the new city siege changes primarily being aimed at? IE rr70+?

The new city changes are aimed to accommodate all players who meat the requirements to partake in the city siege/defense.

tauronus AA stacking, will it get fixed?

The problem is the bonus how it applies, the new system is going to give increased NUMBER of swings as opposed to affecting swing time. I.E. – 100% will give double swings.

WARAyleen Marauders are now able to use real dual wield. How will mutations’ procs play with this? Will they be removed, proc or replace?

Procs will stay the same, as will graphic art.

ArtieeWAR – Is the other instances going to still be a big factor if the city goes into stage 2?

Answer – Each individual instance determines its own fate. There is no such thing as a shared VP pool for the city sieges now.

cpodemayo – Will the Stage 2 instances, such as Bright Wizard College, be changed? If so, how?

Answer – The Warlord encounter has been COMPLETELY revamped and is nothing like you see in the game currently. It is 100% RvR-driven, like every aspect of the new City Siege.

“I, FocusBot” – Warhammer Online

08 Apr

I can imagine that addons are a challenge in game development. You want UI’s to be customizable and flexible so addon developers have good tools to work with. Most successful MMOs have a great mod/addon community and Warhammer for the most part is doing just fine for addons. The trouble is where to draw the line for allowing addons control.

Occasionally causing some spikes of outrage is an auto-targetting addon that seems to constantly reset your target to a main assists target. The tools are in place for you to do this manually if you wanted, you simply click your main assist macro in between casts or whatever. Why then is this addon an issue for many?

For me, the answer is because it is removing choice and control from the player and turning it into computer-aided targetting which in my opinion is against the spirit of the game. I can handle losing to talented players and groups that communicate well, but it is frustrating losing to some computer controlled auto-targetting system.

While I think the addon being able to press buttons for a player should maybe be looked at by the team in charge of UI tools, I think it really should come down to players just taking some pride in their gaming. If you take pride in your gaming and your accomplishments in the game, you are probably a lot less likely to use addons to control your character.

Have fun out there, and if you want to really win, be the one making decisions for your character.
