Google vs Bing

16 Mar

I feel I owe this post to my friend Clint.

On the weekend I went down to hang out and visit with a bunch of guys I have been gaming with for years in the Seattle area.

I got a call from Clint and just asked him to give me his address so I could look it up on google maps/directions and head out there. He immediately corrected me and told me I meant to say “Bing” maps. I kind of yes’d him, and told him I would look it up on Bing. I got off the phone and opened up Bing. I spent about 10 seconds and I because I was in a hurry, switched over to the more familiar Google maps site. I wrote down the directions on a piece of  paper and we headed out to our location.

We drove up and down a road looking for a step in the directions for 20 minutes, which was quite rage inducing. Finally I had to call him. He told me that I had some roads mixed up and I needed to turn on a couple different roads first. I chalked it up to me writing it down wrong when I was copying the directions.

Later that evening, when we got home, my wife pulled up the google directions. Turns out I had written them down correctly, they were just wrong! She then looked up Bing, and they would have gotten us there perfectly.

I am a pretty big fan of both Microsoft and Google, but in the first time competing head to head for my approval. Microsoft wins the round.

“purging” – Warhammer Online

16 Mar

A hot topic for the PvE crowd is Tomb of the Vulture Lord (TOVL) purging. Here are my thoughts and experiences with TOVL and purging.

TOVL is the most difficult and buggy instance in Warhammer Online. It is frustrating and time consuming to complete and the drops are rare or even non-existant if you are unlucky enough. Shout-out to my group which is aiming for 0/10 on the chest drop this week.

Purging is when someone invades your instance. It can be a group or a single person invading. If your group dies either from them or from the fight you may currently be in the middle of, you are kicked out of the instance. The purge lasts 30 minutes then you can move on and continue your frustrating PvE session.

As it stands now, almost all purges I see/hear about are single people just wanting to wreck a groups night. Probably because someone single purged them and they vow to get back at them.

In general, I believe purging is pretty universally hated. Many people schedule PvE around working schedules and adding delays often overlaps the amount of time people have or wrecks one of their only weekly timeslots for the people to get together.

When I first heard about the purging mechanic, I thought it sounded really cool. In practice however, every experience I can recall was negative and frustrating. I suppose I am someone that likes to keep PvE and PvP seperate. If I schedule/plan some PvE time I want to get it done as quickly as possible and get back to PvE. Having things that drag it out, without really having a good fight is frustrating.

How would I fix purging? Assuming removing purging completely is not an option, I would suggest the following changes:

  • Max of 1-2 purges per lockout. No more then 1 every 2 hours
  • Increase the rewards for both sides. Maybe some good talismans
  • You can only purge with a 6man group and can only purge 6 man groups
  • Shorten the timer for a purge. Have it be a quicker fight and be done.

“freeblemers” – Warhammer Online

10 Mar

Mythic recently added emblems, or scenerio currency used for powerful weapons and eventually more items in Warhammer. The emblems are given out for being present at the end of a scenerio. This has actually helped alleviate one of the biggest issues people have with the game, which is the number of premade groups that run. With the scenerio currency being given out for just being in scenerios, a lot more people are solo queueing for slightly faster emblem gain over waiting for group pops. However, this added a new problem in the game, people not participating in the scenerio and just collecting there free emblem(s).

Many are calling for Mythic to take steps to correct this immediately, but the situation really is kinda sticky. Technically people that participate little and are not afk are not really breaking any rules, they are just asshats. I asked Mythic for comment and I was told they are exploring their options. I would imagine they would not want CSRs being bogged down with these types of issues, the CSRs are still busy looking for my TOVL boss 8 bag from 3 weeks ago, so I am not certain they would be the answer anyways. :)

WoW handles the issue of people trying to afk in Battlegrounds by allowing people to easily report a person. When a person gets reported by a certain amount of people, they are flagged and will not make honour points until they go participate in the battle again. This works for WoW and would work to stop people trying to not participate and get renown, but they would still be able to get the emblem at the end of the scenerio fairly easily and at the moment, that is the primary goal of the people abusing the system.

Having a vote to kick would never work because people are jerks and groups would just kick people they didn’t like. Stats are also hard to go by, because who is to say what is more valuable, charging to the front of a scenerio with a group and racking up numbers, or guarding a point and looking intimidating enough that people do not even try to take it back.

Making emblems drop off player kills sounds like a good idea, until you realize that it will undo the progress for solo queueing that this latest patch has made. Giving more emblems for winning and a single emblem for participating will still not foil people from just idling and collecting the 1 emblem.

You know what, this is a tough one. I don’t know what I would do in this situation if I was Mythic. I would probably look to implement something that would allow players to take care of players that tried to grief them by not participating, but due to the reasons above, I am not sure how it would be best implemented.

What do you guys think?

“winning the lotto in the desert” – Warhammer Online

09 Mar

Mythic came out with some long awaited improvements to the zealot class today, but how they decided on these changes leave me completely baffled.

I played a zealot for the first year after release as a primary character and off and on since. Gear and damage kept getting better and higher and the zealot seemed to fall way behind other healers in terms of survivability.

I have threads up discussing zealot issues with the zealot community. (Like the one here: http://forums.warhammeronline.com/warhammer/board/message?board.id=chaos_zl&thread.id=3037 )

Survivability issues are the primary concern and include a lack of some of the tactics given to our mirror class the Rune Priest (ie. Ancestors Echo), and an AE detaunt which other healing pairs and even a lot of DPS get. Gear is also a big concern as almost all the pvp healing zealot gear comes from PvE. In general, a big lack of mitigating damage for the class. No other zealot that I have spoken to has complained that any of our heals heal for too little. It is being able to survive to cast them that is the issue :P

Compounding the puzzlement is the choice of spells. The instant spell, flash of chaos is already more effecient, reliable and mobile then the large single target heal we have, so how can it be underperforming but the other one be ok?

Additionally Flash of Chaos and Leaping Alteration are also the two biggest reasons zealots jump out of groups to heal and rake in renown. Which is great, but it gives the class a bad name, and builds a bigger divide between organized groups and zealots and really it sets the community against us when we want valid changes.

It really isn’t a bad change, I look forward to it, but it makes me wonder if Mythic really does read the Zealot class forums. It will be nice to have those spells heal for more, however, I equate this to Mythic handing us $10,000 when we are dying of thirst in the desert. It makes you feel bad for needing to ask for more, but Mythic, do you have any water? We need to survive, not more money.

ps. Transference is way overpowered. I once saw a zealot in group vs group combat do almost 1000 damage every 5 seconds with it. No other class on destruction can do that kind of spike damage in a 5 second interval. I would completely understand if this needs to be mirrored to Rune Priests or simply given to them and taken away from zealots as a buff to destruction. :)

Survey

09 Mar

Did any of you play Utopia/Earth/Travian? Maybe even the older text based real time games from the BBS’s?

You would grow your kingdom, expand your lands and send attacks off at other realms/kingdoms!

I am pondering creating a game similar to those and releasing it with a facebook and web interface. I need some help though, I need your feedback!

1) What did you like most about those types of games?

2) What did you like least?

3) Would you play it on Facebook (assuming it was similar and fun)?

4) Would you like your particular kingdom to be part of a small group (5-10), a large group (10-100+) or individual only?

5) Do you like Medieval based? Space based? Mixed everything? (ie.Ninjas vs Pirates vs Robots)

6) What do you think personally of having it based on geography rather then friends/family? ie. Neighbourhoods, Cities, Provinces, Countries vs others in a giant game of world domination.

Any and all feedback would be great! :)

“build it and they will come?” – Warhammer Online RvR City

09 Mar

Warhammer developers are hard at work (I assume) on the city changes for the next patch. Their goal is to make it an RvR based encounter.

Any way you look at this, it is quite a large undertaking and while it is something most players would welcome figuring out and accounting for all the details in this task will not be easy.

Sounds like a great topic to start brainstorming and speculating on! If I had to come up with a plan for this, what would I do? (well for starters I would probably have a team to brainstorm with)

Damn, no team. Alright, lets see what challenges and situations you would be up against, and put some of my thoughts out there:

-Rewards for defending and attacking need to be in place and need to be undoubtably worthwhile.

-Choose a route: Have it either  full player vs player and have a queue system for a 24 vs 24 instance.

-Alternately, you need to have a process for which empty scenerios are handled, probably waves of NPCs, possibly dependent on the number of defenders. You could also have buffs to the defenders that scale in value depending on how many players are defending.

-You want the attackers to have a slight edge over defenders. This is stage 2, so you have already beat the attackers down a good bit. Could give a faster respawn to the attackers, maybe even a spawn point that gets closer to the King as you work and battle your way through the instance and take certain points.

-You probably want a time limit on the instance.

-You probably want multi stage PQs as you progress through. Having a battle for a flag with doors between the battles.

-You want to figure out how lockouts will work, you dont want to flood the sovreign gear too much, but continuing would be a real issue, in fact any lockouts would be an issue.

-You want to figure out how your going to keep people in instances, instead of having them jump around looking for something less defended/easier.

Wow, thats a lot to try to figure out. I feel bad for the people having to release the information on the redesign, I have a feeling no matter what they do, it is going to have a lot of back seat devs up in arms over the choices! :)

“ironclad” – Warhammer Online

02 Mar

This past weekend had a special event that ran almost as a feeling out test for 6 v 6 scenerios in Warhammer Online.

Personally, I really enjoyed it. It was a refreshing change of pace and combined with a love for group vs group competition it made for good times. I do prefer more of an open battlefield then the scenerio provided, but this was definately better then nothing.

While my experience with my nightly group was great, my experience solo’ing was definately hit or miss.

Groups filled with no healers, people that refused respawn and the glorious person that sat in the spawn area telling people “Don’t leave the spawn area, it will just encourage people to keep making premade groups!” made up the unfortunate part of soloing, but randomly getting a weird looking group setup that ends up beating a decent group on the other side was pretty fun.

I hope more 6 v 6 events find there way into the game, but perhaps with different maps as well.
