“subscribers” – damned them to hell, except you have nothing without them

24 Feb

Today was patch day (1.3.4) for Warhammer Online.

A few changes went in that will improve the game, unfortunately, the key word in this statement is “few”. very little actually is being patched in, instead, existing content is just being shuffled around.

In my opinion, this patch is an indicator of how few resources are available or are being used on growing the content of the game at this point in time.

On to the point of this post. I overheard some respected and established players calling this patch the last straw for them. The were citing that Mythic was spending too much time and resources trying to spread the game to additional countries (like Korea) and not enough time appeasing existing North American subscribers with additional development.

At first thought, I was right with them. I know a decent number of people barely hanging onto their subscriptions after 1.5 years with a lot of the same iussues and very little new content or itemization. After giving it further thought, when I consider the decision as a business decision, I would probably consider that people hanging on till this point are probably not going to suddenly all disapear, but continue hanging on (for the most part) for the small new items being offered. Thinking along those lines, maybe the most intelligent course of action is to attempt to get into this new markets and take a risk to bring in large amounts of subscribers. This of course could up profits, which ups the amount that can be spent on development and perhaps even speed an expansion, which is even more money from sales and it generates new “buzz” around the game.

It is a hard call, but I think it was a reasonable decision by Mythic to push the new markets, even at the slight expense of the current one. I for one hope it works out.

“zerg” – Warhammer Online

24 Feb

Oxford defines the word zerg as “No results found for zerg:”

Zerg is an interesting word in gaming and has single handedly taken gaming communication down a notch. It is used for many situations and is about as far from precise information as you can get.

“The other side is zergy tonight”

“There is a zerg over there”

“The guild Whitelisted is just a zerg guild”

In most of these sentences, you don’t actually know what is going on. When someone calls out the zerg is coming, you almost need to reply back, “what zerg?” “What classes?”, “Is there zerg bigger then our zerg?”, “Should we engage their zerg or should we take our zerg and zerg an objective in another location?”

Where did the word zerg come from? A lot of gamers probably couldn’t even tell you. Only an educated guess on my part says it gained popularity and useage with the Starcraft universe and a race that had zerg units which did use numbers to win battles, but I am not certain that was the origin. I was not a huge fan of starcraft myself, but just like the first one, I do plan to try out Starcraft 2, which gets released fairly soon.

Early on in beta, I actually attempted to ban the word zerg for my guild, Jaded Souls. It lasted a while, but the useage of the word is so rooted in day to day lingo and communication that I eventually lost the battle. Who can really blame my effort though, it was like 1 person against a zerg.

1.Post

24 Feb

Might as well jump right in and explain a bit about why I started a blog.

I love gaming.

I love business.

I love problem solving and debate.

My hope is I can have fun posting gaming tidbits, opinions on design decisions and hopefully offering my thoughts on why certain decisions were made, even if the reasoning is not released by a particular studio.

Blog topics will be largely based on games I am playing currently, but hopefully a portion can be submitted as well. If you have ever wondered, wow, why would a game company release something like this, or why was a decision made. Those would make great topics!

Comments, constructive criticism and debate are highly encourged so leave as much feedback as you want! :)

ps. I am open for any suggestions to improving this site, and definately for any ways to make it easier to communicate back and forth for people stopping by!
